Completeness: From Husserl to Carnap

چکیده
Abstract In his Doppelvortrag (1901), Edmund Husserl introduced two concepts of “definiteness” which have been interpreted as a vindication role in the history completeness. Some commentators defended that meaning these notions should be understood categoricity, while other scholars believed it is closer to syntactic A detailed study early twentieth-century axiomatics and Husserl’s shows, however, many completeness were conflated equivalent. Although “absolute definiteness” was principally an attempt characterize non-extendible manifolds axiom systems (different from Hilbert’s completeness), absolutely definite theory has unique model and, thus, non-forkable semantically complete (decidable). Non-forkability decidability formally delimited by Fraenkel Carnap almost three decades later fact, they mentioned precursor latter. Therefore, this paper contributes reassessment place logic.

Husserl and Hilbert on Completeness and Husserl's Term Rewrite-based Theory of Multiplicity (Invited Talk)
Hilbert and Husserl presented axiomatic arithmetic theories in different ways and proposed two different notions of “completeness” for arithmetic, at the turning of the 20th Century (1900– 1901). The former led to the completion axiom, the latter completion of rewriting. We look into the latter in comparison with the former. The key notion to understand the latter is the notion of definite mult...

متن کاملAn Apology of Carnap
This paper is focused on dismissive metaontological views about ontology. The paper’s first section deals with radical dismissivism: a view which I interpret as Carnap’s (1956). The second section approaches moderate dismissivism: a view which I interpret as Hirsch’s (2011). My first claim is stated in section three: that there are significant differences between the mentioned authors. However,...
متن کاملCarnap on empirical significance
Carnap’s search for a criterion of empirical significance is usually considered a failure. I argue that the results from two out of his three different approaches are at the very least problematic, but that one approach led to success. Carnap’s criterion of translatability into logical syntax is too vague to allow for definite results. His criteria for terms—introducibility by chains of reducti...
